How to Know If You Need Orthotics
Orthotic insoles replace the lining in your shoes and are specifically designed to ease foot pain. Physicians and physical therapists at Stryder recommend orthotics for a variety of lower body conditions.
If you experience pain in your feet, hips, knees, or back, orthotics may provide relief. They can also help you stand comfortably for long periods.
Orthotics can improve how you walk, stand, or run and relieve foot pain related to conditions like diabetes, plantar fasciitis, bursitis, and arthritis.
Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf: Choosing the Right Orthotic for You
Pharmacy-shelf orthotic inserts offer minimal or temporary relief. Because they’re not customized, they aren’t effective for addressing each person’s unique pain source.
Custom orthotics, prescribed by a specialist, provide longer-lasting pain relief. At Stryder, our experts conduct a comprehensive gait analysis and biomechanical evaluation to recommend the best orthotic for you. The right insert can often bring immediate pain relief.
Types of Custom Orthotics
Some custom orthotics are designed to cushion joints, while others help control specific motions. After a thorough evaluation, your specialist will recommend either casted or heat-molded orthotics based on your needs.
Casted Orthotics
Casted orthotics are crafted from a plaster mold of your feet. Once the mold dries, it’s sent to a lab where custom orthotics are manufactured according to your specialist’s recommendations. Casted orthotics usually take up to three weeks to arrive.
As you get fitted, you'll learn how to break in your new orthotics. Since they change the weight distribution on your foot, some adjustment is needed. We generally recommend starting with one to two hours of wear on the first day, gradually increasing over time. Wait until you're fully comfortable walking in them all day before wearing them for exercise or sports. Casted orthotics typically last five to seven years.
